Hyper-energy efficient homes in sunny Rooney Valley; Remington Homes Sheds light on keys to energy savings

March 30, 2009

LAKEWOOD, CO – Fourth-generation Colorado new home builder Remington Homes -- which saw its sales grow by 30 percent in 2008 -- has just laid the foundation for some of the most energy efficient new patio homes in metro Denver.

Some of its 74 new luxury patio homes that are about to rise along the sunny slopes of Solterra, the popular new hill town community in the developing Rooney Valley, will achieve a coveted five-star-plus certification from Energy Star Homes, a program of the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA.

As the company prepares to “go vertical” with the hyper-energy efficient homes, it is working with Carma Developers, which is in charge of the 300-acre community. Together, the companies hope to demonstrate some of the common-sense strategies that Remington Homes is employing, such as:

  • Right-sizing heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) for each individual home and home site.
  • Installing 92-percent efficient furnaces.
  • Using only low-E, argon gas filled windows, which for the first time will be standard in the homes that Remington Homes is featuring at Solterra.
  • Properly constructing exterior walls framed with 2x6-inch studs, rather than more common 2x4s.
  • Insulating with blown cellulose insulation -- largely made from recycled newspapers.

Those features and others will translate into as much as 50 percent energy cost savings for residents.

The homes will feature first-floor living and are targeted primarily toward active adults. Most of the homes will be ranch-style homes. "Remington Homes has really carved a great niche in the low-maintenance patio home market that largely attracts active adults, who are the fastest growing population segment in metro Denver," said Sue Selle, president, the Genesis Group.

According to Robby Schwarz, principal, energyLogic, the company that will provide the individual inspections to certify the energy performance of each of the new homes, the technologies being used by Remington Homes will translate into savings for its home owners, but just as important, comfort.

According to Ron Hauptman, president, Remington Homes, energy savings and comfort are as important to active adult homebuyers as first-floor master bedrooms, exceptional kitchens and plenty of entertainment areas. Active adults usually have purchased a number of homes over the course of their lives, points out Hauptman. “Active adults appreciate the long-term implications of the choices that they make in the purchase of a new home,” he says. He also says that they will appreciate the amenities and strong sense of community in a master-planned community such as Solterra.

Each of the new patio homes will come with a stunning array of designer features, including a roomy kitchen with island, double ovens, tile countertops, a large great room, vaulted ceilings, oversized windows, fireplace, hardwood floors in the entryways, kitchens, and nooks, extras not commonly associated with patio homes. The homes will range in price from the high $400,000s, but, the common-sense technologies are appropriate for any home.
